Lighting the Pond & Landscape
The primary function of landscape lighting is
safety, providing light for traversing stairs, bridges and pathways at
night. But lighting can also be used throughout the garden to add a new
aesthetic dimension to your yard. It can be used to accent specimen shrubs,
create shadow effects on a rock wall, or project the ripples on a pond's
surface onto surrounding trees. Adding optional coloured lenses creates
even more possibilities. Today's landscape lighting is also available in
a wide variety of styles and finishes, making it attractive enough that
it also looks good during the day. Outdoor lighting falls into two categories:
line (115V) and low (12V) voltage.
The advantages of low voltage landscape
lighting are twofold. Because outdoor lighting is typically on for several
hours every evening, or even all night, utilizing low voltage lights will
result in considerable power savings, particularly in the winter when days
are shorter. There is also no electrocution hazard with this system, allowing
wiring to be laid on or just below the surface.
The advantage of line voltage lighting
is quite simple: more power means brighter individual lights. Low voltage lighting is the recommended system for most residential and
light commercial applications.
